The Leonberger, the lion among dogs, is often thought of as a great, cuddly teddy bear and, indeed, there are lots of times when it fits that bill. But bear cubs grow into bears, and Leo pups grow into 45-69kg of power and muscle.
This is something that you have to consider, is the Leo the right dog for you? I would recommend that you visit one or two at home first, then if you can have one visit you in your home. When you see them at shows you can't really take in the size needed for one in your home environment.
They love to play in water or dig in the mud, so consider the BIG muddy wet feet that you will suffer.
They moult and hair comes out by the bag load, usually covering most things in their area.
Can you imagine a big 60kg dog having a play in your garden. Things that are not fixed down will move. Things that grow will be stood on.
You must start training your Leo the rules of the from day 1. Leos love children but need to learn the rules of play.
You must always keep training going from a young pup, through the difficult juvenile stage into an adult. At times you will think he has not learned anything and it has all gone out the window, but you always need to persist.
All vet bills will be bigger because of the size, so insurance is very important.
They don't fit into the back of a standard car, so you have to get a big one, an estate at least.
Saying this we love our Leo family and wouldn't be without them, but please think carefully before you get one they are a big dog and need lots of time to train with gentle but firm handling..
